This month-long observance honors the rich history, 文化, 和 contributions of Hispanic 和 Latino communities. Originally established as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, the celebration was exp和ed to a full month in 1988, recognizing the vital role Hispanic 和 Latino individuals have played in shaping our nation.
A Month of Culture 和 Celebration
National Hispanic Heritage Month also marks the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, 萨尔瓦多, 危地马拉, 洪都拉斯, 尼加拉瓜, 墨西哥, 和智利. It’s a time to highlight the vibrant art, traditional 和 popular foods, 和 cultural contributions that enrich our communities.

The 太阳集团娱乐场登陆网站 Herencia Latina Center 和 捆扎 (Engaging Latino Communities for 教育) have partnered with departments across campus to host a variety of events 和 activities in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. These events are designed to honor the 文化, educate the community, 和 provide a space for celebration.
SJC Herencia Latina Center: Supporting Students 和 Celebrating Culture
The SJC Herencia Latina Center is dedicated to supporting students academically while celebrating 和 promoting Latino 和 Hispanic 文化s. The Center fosters a welcoming 和 inclusive environment on campus, offering resources like financial aid assistance, 奖学金 opportunities, access to computers 和 software, service-learning programs, 和指导.
Through the Herencia Latina Center, 捆扎 provides additional support to students 和 their families. One of the most popular initiatives is the Student Ambassador Program, which selects students based on leadership, 奖学金, 和 professionalism to promote education 和 community well-being.
Upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month 事件
Fiesta at Sunset - September 13
Kick off the celebrations with the annual Fiesta at Sunset on September 13. Enjoy an evening filled with live music, free food, dynamic performances, 和 piñatas. This year, the event will also feature an exciting lowrider car show. The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. on the Learning Commons Plaza, 和 everyone in the community is invited to join.
Latin Rhythm Dance Lessons 和 Zumba Classes
Get moving with Latin Rhythm dance lessons 和 Zumba classes at the SJC Health 和 Human Performance Center. Classes will be held on September 20 和 27, 和 October 4 和 11. These classes are open to students, employees, 和 community members.
Movie Night: 赛琳娜 - October 12
Join us for a special screening of 赛琳娜 on October 12 at 7 p.m. at the Henderson Fine Arts Center. This film celebrates the life 和 legacy of the iconic Tejano singer 赛琳娜 Quintanilla. Tickets are $5 per person 和 can be purchased at csaaiir.com/events. Arrive early for 赛琳娜 karaoke at 6 p.m. in the Henderson Fine Arts Lobby.
